Motorists have been encouraged to expand their knowledge of exactly what is meant by fully comprehensive car insurance policies.

Pete Harrison, car insurance expert at MoneySupermarket.com, explained that not every policy is the same and urged drivers to do some research.

"Exclusions and caveats can be commonplace in fully comprehensive car insurance policies, and it is vital motorists scour the small print with a fine tooth-comb, to ensure their policy has the level of cover they need to avoid getting caught out," he said.

Mr Harrison added that drivers will need to look into the extra costs involved as well because they may end paying more for things like legal cover. This changes the balance of good value policies because the cheapest offer may end up being more expensive once you have forked out for the additional services.

In an example for a 40-year-old male driving an average vehicle, the provider found a number of fully comprehensive car insurance policies ranging in price from £336.16 to £354.92. However, not all included personal accident cover, and cover for things such as new car replacement and emergency accommodation varied between providers.
