The extent of the damage caused by the recent stormy weather has been revealed in the car insurance claims made in the wake of the event.

Compiled by the AA, the data revealed that the broker recorded 991 claims during the first five days of the year. It claims that when this has been scaled up, the equivalent of over 5,600 car insurance claims around the country could be related to the weather.

The majority of the car insurance claims were thought to be from people in Scotland as this is where the weather was worst. In fact, 65 per cent of all claims made north of the border between the 1 and 5 of January are thought to be weather-related.

Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, commented on the findings: “Other claims are from items not fixed to the ground – including eight cars damaged by trampolines, dozens of wheelie bins, garden sheds, TV aerials, a church hall roof and even a dinghy.

"Several customers also had their car door whipped out of their hand by a gust of wind, breaking hinge mechanisms, smashing glass or damaging a vehicle parked in the next space.”
