Key and lock clauses in car insurance policies are becoming increasingly important to a rising number of female drivers, a recent survey has shown.
Independent financial research company Defaqto found that women are far more likely to look for policies that cover the loss or theft of keys and any consequent lock changes than men. The figures also suggest that it is, in fact, becoming one of the most important factors in deciding on a policys.
The demand for the cover, however, is not being matched with supply, with 45 per cent of car insurance policies not providing for lock changes for stolen keys.
Mike Powell, a leading Insight Analyst for General Insurance at Defaqto, said the numbers showed that women were thinking about whether they might have their handbags snatched or lost when they cam to car insurance. He said that any clauses, however, would always be very carefully worded.
"Check the policy wording as cover is usually subject to the policyholder being able to establish that the identity or garaging address of their car is known to any person who is in possession of the ignition keys," he said.
