Car insurance policies are providing drivers with great difficulty when they try to claim for damaged caused by potholes.
Many policy holders are finding they cannot gain compensation for damage from holes in the roads. One leading expert in the field said there should be a formal structure in place to make sure such claims are clear.
Duncan McClure Fisher, who runs the potholes.co.uk website, said the issue was causing incredible frustration among people whose claims were being denied by the authorities involved.
"We do have lots of stories on our website which shows it's been difficult to get the claim paid," Said Mr Fisher.
"If they were given information which told them 'this is what you've got to do to make your claim' then I think you've got a fair structure for the council and the driver."
A recent survey looked at claims that had been made by drivers whose cars had been damaged from potholes on the M1. 49 claims were submitted in the period they examined, and just five of those resulted in the drivers being compensated, working out at one in nine drivers.
In response to a Freedom of Information Act request made on the issue, the Highways Agency insisted defects in the road are quickly dealt with.
