With more British drivers expected to take to the road on their holiday this summer rather than risk being caught up in airline strike issues or volcanic ash cancellations, motorists have been warned to ensure that they are properly prepared for the journey and that their car insurance policy adequately covers them to travel outside the UK.

Driving in mainland Europe has distinct advantages – no worries about volcanic ash or airline strike action and plenty of flexibility to explore wonderful countryside. However, there are a number of issues to consider before taking your car abroad.

First of all, it is important to ensure that your car is properly up to making such a long journey. At the very least, oil, coolant and screen wash levels, as well as tyre pressures, should be checked before setting off.

Also, motorists need to ensure that they have adequate car insurance and breakdown cover in place should it be needed. Not all car insurance policies include cover for travel abroad as standard. You will need to check this with your insurer and purchase additional insurance cover, if necessary.

In addition, it is suggested that holidaymakers plan their journey in advance, using a route planner, in order to get the most from their trip. And finally, having a phrase book at hand in case it is necessary to ask for help or directions while travelling, is always a good idea.
