Motorists have been warned that if they drive without having had sufficient sleep they are putting themselves in danger.
Recent research carried out by webuyanycar.com has shown that 86 per cent of motorists routinely have less than eight hours of sleep at night and about a third of drivers say that they suffer from insomnia, so that they have weakened concentration due to poor sleep. Some three quarters of those surveyed said that they often get behind the wheel of their car in the morning without having had sufficient sleep.
This could lead to dangerous situations on the road, potentially even to accidents which can drive up car insurance claims, as well as cause injury to those involved.
Jeremy Herbert from the firm who commissioned the research, said: “People are living fast-paced lives but worryingly our survey shows they don't seem to be able to slow down behind the wheel.” He added: “This is even more dangerous when combined with a lack of sleep."
Safer Motoring experts have pointed out that reaction times of drivers with insuffiencient sleep are much slower than those of alert, concentrating drivers.
