Recent research from More Than car insurance has revealed that road rage after an argument with a partner or spouse has led to almost 2.5 million accidents on UK roads.

The worldwide media story about Tiger Woods crashing his car into a tree following an argument with his wife has highlighted the issue of romantic road rage. More Than car insurance has looked into the issue and found that nearly 2.5 million traffic incidents in the UK have been caused by inattentive driving following a romantic row.

The insurer has developed a points system to assess the risk of a car accident following an argument. A score is allocated based on the severity of the row. For example a full-on blazing row would receive 12 points and a silent treatment situation would receive 2 points in the assessment.

More Than's research has found that 36 per cent of drivers pay far less attention to the road following an argument and 19 per cent of those surveyed said that they drive erratically following a romantic contretemps.

The car insurer's advice is to have a cooling down period after a row, if at all possible. This will allow emotional and physical stress levels to dissipate so that drivers can concentrate on the road and drive safely.
