New research has revealed that UK drivers taking out multi-car insurance policies may not be getting the best deal available.
The study was carried out by swiftcover.com. It found that 30 per cent of UK households now possess more than one vehicle. The figures also revealed that motorists who opt for multi-car insurance policies in an attempt to save money may not be getting the bargain they think. The study found that it can, in fact, be cheaper to take out separate insurance cover for each car.
Swiftcover.com carried out the research by comparing the price for insuring two popular makes of car on a multi-car policy, compared with insuring the cars separately. It found that those paying for multi-car cover could actually by paying twice as much as they would have with separate cover.
Craig Staniland, underwriting director at swiftcover.com, said: "With the number of multi-car households on the rise, it's more important than ever that customers shop around to make sure that they're getting the best deal on their car insurance."
He went on to warn motorists that multi-car discounts may not always be the cheapest option: "It may be more cost-effective to insure each car separately, so make sure you explore all the options before choosing your car insurer, especially when renewing, as the cheapest insurer last year may not be getting you the best deal this year."
