A recent study carried out by Swinton Car Insurance has found that van drivers are more knowledgeable than car drivers about vehicle engines. This research should help van insurers rest easier at night.
The research involved 1,500 motorists in the UK and revealed that 97 per cent of van drivers knew how to change a tyre on their vehicle, compared with only 76 per cent of car drivers. In addition, 81 per cent of van drivers were aware of the correct tyre pressure for their vehicle, with only 20 per cent of car drivers aware of the legal minimum. These findings can be partly explained by the fact that van drivers routinely drive longer distances than car motorists.
Phil Moss, commercial vehicle manager at Swinton, said: "It is good to know that our van insurance customers are so knowledgeable about their engines, but at the same time it is concerning than many car drivers lack basic understanding."
The company advised all drivers, regardless of the type of vehicle, to be aware of the correct pressure for tyres, how to fill their tyres to the correct pressure, as well as how to top up oil and water levels, and to be able to change a tyre and windscreen wiper.
