A report from Kwik Fit Car Insurance has found that UK motorists spent some £300 million on replacement tyres in 2009, due to rubber damage.

The research from Kwik Fit showed that 28 per cent of motorists had a flat tyre or puncture in 2009. Much of the blame for this rubber damage has been put down to the declining state of UK roads, many of which were particularly affected by the icy conditions we suffered earlier this year. In addition, potholes have become a major problem for drivers as they have the potential to cause significant damage to both tyres and to a car's suspension.

The report found that the worst area of the country for tyre damage was London, and the area of the country least affected was the East Midlands.

Many motorists in the UK are in the habit of setting off in their car, even on long journeys, without checking the state of their tyres. Motorists should be aware that the legally-required tread depth is 1.6mm and that anything below that depth can cause a loss of control of their vehicle, as well as creating an increased risk of wear and tear and tyre blow-outs.
