It is already an accepted fact that women are statistically safer drivers than men but a new study conducted by the AA has revealed that woman are also 150 per cent less likely than men to have a driving conviction.

Women generally can expect to get cheaper car insurance than their men-folk and this research provides further rationale as to why this would be the case. The figures reveal that throughout the UK, male drivers are statistically far more likely than women to have a driving conviction.

Most convictions are for speeding, which make up 85 per cent of all convictions, breaking a red light comes in second at 9 per cent, drink driving in third at 2 per cent and 1.5 per cent of drivers receive a conviction for driving without insurance.

Younger drivers are more likely to have convictions and young male drivers are the most likely of all.

Simon Douglas, director of AA insurance, commented: "Whatever your age or sex, insurers take notice of driving offences, especially multiple offenders and this is reflected in premiums. That's because regular offenders are much more likely to make an insurance claim than those who have a clean license. Keeping the right side of the law is one of the best ways to keep your insurance premiums in check."
