With the UK's freezing weather set to continue, motorists worried about the possibility having to abandon their vehicle are being advised to speak to their car, van or motorbike insurance provider to clarify their stance on such a situation.
Car insurance experts at comparison site Money Supermarket point out that, as long as a vehicle is visible, it shouldn't matter where it is parked if it is abandoned – but checking with motor insurance providers is still recommended.
The site's Steve Sweeney adds: "Comprehensive motor breakdown cover is a must for motorists to avoid being stranded in the cold. I advise Brits [to] make regular checks to their vehicles before driving to avoid being a victim of a breakdown."
Regular precautionary measures he suggests include checking oil levels, anti-freeze, hazard lights and tyres for tread depth and pressure, as well as stowing a spare tyre in the boot.
"It is also essential your vehicle holds items such as a torch, reflective triangle sign, high-visibility jacket, first-aid kit and jump leads," he notes.
To be prepared for the "potential actions of less responsible road users", motorists are also reminded to keep an adequate distance from the vehicle in front.
