Male motorists living in the City of London are most likely to have a conviction for drink driving, according to research. The revelation comes as car insurance customers are urged not to risk higher premiums – or even a driving ban – by getting behind the wheel after a festive tipple.

The study by Money Supermarket shows that, on average, drink drivers who are caught can expect their annual car insurance premiums to go up by 75 per cent. Some motor insurance providers won't even quote to cover individuals with a conviction.

Steve Sweeney, the comparison site's head of motor insurance, commented that it is "no great shock" to see City dwellers often have drink driving convictions and noted that female drivers did not feature in the top ten.

"Of course we all want to get into the Christmas spirit at this time of year but drink driving costs lives," he continued. "The rules of the road are there for a reason; motorists who get in a car having consumed alcohol will find that their reaction times, co-ordination and judgement will be impaired – making them a danger not only to themselves but also to other motorists and pedestrians."
