Safe driving advice keeps on coming for UK car insurance customers as the nation prepares for a prolonged cold snap over the coming weeks. The latest comes from the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM), where motoring specialists say skidding on ice is the main concern for anyone getting behind the wheel in freezing conditions.
"When driving in snow, get your speed right – not too fast so that you risk losing control, but not so slow that you risk losing momentum when you need it – and brake, steer and accelerate as smoothly as possible," urges Peter Rodger, IAM chief examiner. "Start gently from stationary, avoiding high revs. If you get yourself into a skid, the main thing to remember is to take your foot off the accelerator and steer, never use the brake."
Other reminders for car insurance customers from the IAM include doubling – or even tripling – your normal stopping distance from the vehicle in front, and planning journeys around busier roads as they're more likely to have been gritted.
Motorists are also advised to stay in the clearest lane – where it's viable – on motorways, keeping within the clear tyre tracks if possible.
