Car insurance experts have offered UK motorists some timely winter driving tips as widespread drops in temperature are forecast across the nation during the lead-up to Christmas.
To avoid a costly weather-induced car insurance claim, the Saga Group's motoring specialists remind drivers to switch on their lights if foggy conditions mean they can't see more than 100 metres ahead of them. During their research, the car insurance experts found that fog is the third biggest deterrent to winter drivers, behind snow/ice and heavy rain.
Overall, a fifth of motorists plan to either stay at home or use public transport over the next few weeks, and female drivers are almost twice as worried about getting behind the wheel in bad weather than their male counterparts.
If snowy conditions prevail during the festive season, Saga reminds those who do venture out that they should select second gear when pulling away, gently ease their feet off the clutch to avoid wheel spin and brake and accelerate gradually. A safe distance should also be kept between vehicles since stopping distances are ten times longer in ice and snow.
With fog, motorists should be able to stop within the distance they can see clearly.
