On average, men still shell out more than women for their car insurance every year. And, according to the latest research by Money Supermarket, males in their twenties spend around 112 per cent more than their thirty-something counterparts on motor insurance.

The comparison site's analysis of more than six million quotes between June 2008 and June 2009 shows men cough up an average of 71 per cent more than women for a car insurance policy.

Steve Sweeney, motor insurance head at the site, says it's down to the fact many motor insurance providers still view women as "safer and more mature" drivers, meaning their car insurance is both cheaper and decreases with age at a faster rate than men's.

"Likewise, younger drivers, especially males, will find themselves having to fork out for expensive motor insurance as they are perceived as a high-risk category," he adds.

However, he reassures younger car insurance customers that competitive deals are still to be found simply by shopping around, adding a parent to a policy or exploring specialist providers.

Compared to thirty-something men, whose car insurance costs them an average of £473 per year, Money Supermarket found men in their twenties pay £1004.
