New research by car insurance specialists reveals a large proportion of motorists in Britain are worried about having to drive in the dark after clocks go back at the weekend.

Saga's study also highlights that there are more car insurance claims for accidental damage in winter than any other season.

Out of over 2,000 adults questioned by the car insurance experts, a fifth admit to driving less in the winter in an attempt to avoid the dark. A similar proportion say they choose to shop online rather than go out during the winter evenings.

Andrew Goodsell, Saga Group executive chairman, commented that driving in the dark "is clearly a worry" for a significant number of motorists.

With specific regard to motorists over the age of 50, the car insurance firm's spokesperson added: "Our research shows the over-50s use their experience to adapt their driving to reflect conditions on the road and, as you would expect, have fewer accidents than other age groups."

The most common reasons given by respondents for avoiding driving in the dark included "being blinded by other people's lights", not being able to see well enough, worrying about safety and not being able to judge distance properly.
