Car insurance claims made as a result of theft are most likely to happen in Chislehurst in Bromley and Wingate in Cleveland, according to new research into the UK's car insurance claim hotspots.

Money Supermarket analysed 3.8 million car insurance quotes made by consumers on the comparison website from September last year until August 2009.

Drivers in Chislehurst were found to be three times more likely than the UK average to make a car insurance claim because of their vehicle being broken into or stolen.

Manchester, Sheffield and Bradford all featured in the top 20 locations for such car insurance claims, as did Romford and Ilford in Essex.

Commenting on the findings, Steve Sweeney – Money Supermarket's head of motor insurance – said it is particularly important that drivers living in high-risk areas shop around for the best car insurance deals, since premiums in such areas tend to be higher.

"No matter where you live, there is always a chance you could become a victim of theft and motorists should take this risk seriously," he added. "Motorists need to be aware of how they can reduce their premiums to get car insurance cover that is the best value for money."
